Getting ready for spring!

This was my back deck last year...I 'Waterlogued' the image.

Close up of the birdies last year. The female cardinal (not shown) perches herself at the transom of the bay window in the kitchen when the feeder is empty and sings to me. I'm really not crazy, she has done it a number of times.

I got a great deal on this table and 2 chairs from Ballards Outlet a few years back. The heat and the elements 'weathered' them more than I like. The bamboo director style chairs were a find from HomeGoods and I had custom canvas covers in good outdoor fabric made.

Time to do something.

I bought Sherwin Williams 'Deckscapes' exterior deck stain #3001 Shagbark.

It has a paint texture, not thin like stain.

All painted....really happy with the finish.

Next project is to do some repair on the deck and paint it too.

I 'think' I want to paint a design on the deck floor to look like a rug.

I'm ready to get some color out there. Are you planning for spring?

Floral Arrangements: Real or Fake

What is your take on real vs fake foliage in your home?

I used to do commercial display in retail stores and the fake stuff is great to work in for interesting spaces. However, (in my opinion) in one's home, natural is best.

This image is from a real estate listing.

I see 4 fake arrangements and it looks cluttered.

If your cabinets are dropped it's better to leave them bare than 'decorated'.

This kitchen is in another home just on the market.

Here you can see the cabinets left clean on top.

Branches in the chandy and a simple arrangement on the counter.

In my own home, I sort of go nuts with dried hydrangeas and branches.

I have a few live plants as well but not so great at keeping up with the watering. Usually find them 'hung over'.

My Own One-Room Challenge

Last week I told you a couple of my design bloggy friends Sherry Hart of Design Indulgence and Mary Ann Pickett of classic•casual•home and 18 other bloggy designers are doing a One-Room Challenge. I decided to do challenge myself along side of them and do my own, two guest bedrooms and baths in my own home.

Remember this bathroom finished by previous owner of the house? No place at all for guests to put their 'things except on back of the toilet, and never fond of mirror and fixture both of which went to the Habitat Resale store.

Lightened up the walls, found the mirror and shelf at Home Goods. The shelf was black and I painted it to blend with the mirror. Also changed out the fixture. The towel rack I swear was glued on the wall, didn't feel like doing major wall repair so I left it where it was. Don't ya just know someone that had no sense of dripping water from the sink to get to the towel? I'm not fond of towel racks in the first place.

You can see the reflection in the mirror of the door painted black, one of 31 I did in the entire house. Go here to see my tutorial.

This was a 'dead' space as you walk into the bathroom. I put things on the étegére that guests may need away from home.

Still have much more to do in the bedroom and other bath. Wheels turning!

Design and Spaces

Tonight as I do most nights, I was perusing Pinterest.

One of my favorite boards I catalog is

Design and Spaces. Here is a random sampling.

One of the marks of a good designer is one that can embrace a variety of styles, not just his or her own personal preference.

I like a mix of different styles, don't you?

I actually used to have a black and white striped settee.

Too bad I still don't.

Love the pleated ottoman.

Sorry for the blurred image...love the mirror over the fireplace.

The millwork here is extraordinary.

The creams,whites and golds make a beautiful room.

Contemporary sofa mixed with the traditional mirror along with the white room actually feels comfortable. I can just picture a fluffy rug softening the wood floors.

What do you think about this space?

This is fun too.

I can see a bland room,

no personality.

Add some shelves asymmetrically,

frame some fabric, add your personality with the chair!

I can see a variety of different chairs here, and just by that, the tenor of the room changes!

Design

After being away for a couple of weeks, this ole girl has been up to her eyeballs in projects for Moore Designs.

I am loving this room from New England Home. Of course you know I have a 'thing' for gray and adore how all the millwork is painted the same. It gives great continuity to the space. I'm not crazy about the floors with this room, although I do like them, just in a different space.
