Project Monday

Well...really 2 Mondays
and every single day in between.

A little back story....
I spent many (30) years as a military wife and making the best of each place we lived.  A few times we owned, many times we leased and a couple of times, base housing.  In every situation (except on the base) I painted after getting the owner's approval.  I made my nest my own as best I could and there were many things that I knew were just 'temporary' so it was ok to deal with.  I realized the other day that I was still in military mentality.  We have lived in our home in GA for 3 years  now - the longest most of our tours were - and I realized I am not moving and what has been ok is not anymore, such as wall colors, upholstery (while I have done some - there's more to be done), cabinet hardware, etc. I don't have a custom built home so there are 'builder's grade' finishings on the home than need to be upgraded.

So here we are:

Door Painting for Dummies

These are just a few of the 23 that I did,
well of course I miscounted and at first thought there were 'only' 18, and then I forgot a set of double doors, and a few other closet doors.  Oy.
I opted not to take the doors off since there was no way in jelly beans that I was going to get them back on...Mr. MD is gone (the best time to get these types of projects done...hehe). I just taped around the knobs and hardware.
a few things I learned....
1)  I got the Behr 'Black Forever' paint and the feller at the sales counter talked me into the one with the primer, don't waste your money, it goes on like Elmer's glue.
Ok so tell me which one has the primer and which doesn't?
EXACTLY.
You can't tell either?
Because they both look the same with one coat.
2) My house has warm tones and I really wanted a black with a hint of brown so I got the SW 'Black Magic'.  By the picture above you can see the chocolate, once two coats are on honestly you can't tell the difference.

Oh...and this is VERY important.
this stuff is worth it's weight in gold...
I got more than one spot on the carpet...imagine that?  It also take it off skin...and door frames....and tile!
2) don't use the canvas drop cloth because when you DO drip it goes right through right onto the carpet.  Lovely.
3) make sure to put your feet UNDER the drop cloth because then you don't step in a drip and then walk on your carpet.  Wonder how I knew that?  :)
The bottom two pictures (above) are the master bedroom bath and I used 'Forever Black' (Behr) here, the rest of the doors are the SW 'Black Magic' (6991 all surface enamel).
4)  paint a single coat on each side, move on to another door or two, go back to the first door for a second coat.
Let dry overnight and then go back for touch ups.
5) I used satin finish, watch your brush strokes, keep them long and follow the grain of the wood.

I am really happy with how they turned out, lots of work (it took me over an hour for each door) but worth every stroke.
I also did the powder room vanity
AND
a double vanity in the MB.

Tell me what you think.

ADDENDUM August 2012

I have since painted all of my walls
Sherwin Williams 7647 Crushed Ice.
AND finished 7 more doors in the basement.  Whew!

    2. I have the same question. Have been wanting to paint our interior door black also, but they all have transom windows and I can't decide if I should just paint door and leave trim/transoms wood. Any suggestions?

      Delete
    3. Dear Anon,

If all your trim is white including the transom's, I think painting the doors would be fine. You may want to paint one and look at it for a few days, if you don't like, paint it back white.

Anon #1, if the trim is oak I would not paint the doors, I don't think it would have the look you are going for.

      All the best...

  2. Hi Renae, the pro painteress!!! Looks great.

Makes me realize I need to grab a brush or two and dip in some linseed oil to finish up my doors and some fences...but vacation is still running and I'm on the road having fun.

P.s. Most of my projects also take place while hubby is out of town.

    Take care,

    1. Hey Cindy...
I think if your trim is wood stained you might like to paint the doors the same color as the wood stain or a little darker so they perhaps look like 'real wood'. Check out my Pinterest board on black doors: http://pinterest.com/renaem/black-doors/

I have a question for you though. I have the flat hollow core doors the builder put in (yuck), but I also have oak stained trim. How to you think that would look?

We've thought about painting all our trim white, but not sure we really want to take on that job. Would love your opinion!!

    1. Danielle,
I would say if you own your condo, go for it. It's YOUR home, enjoy it the way you want it. I know by doing my doors this way, our home has a whole different look than all of my neighbors and therefore sets us apart from them. Prospective home buyers will either like it or they won't, I wouldn't worry about what a Realtor (I used to be one!) thinks...the aesthetics with the black doors is a good one. We only plan to live here a few more years and I know my black doors will help sell the place! Good luck.

We're right at 900 sq ft 3 bed, 1 bath, 3 closets, entry, and garage doors--so pretty much 1 "L" shaped hallway lined with doors. Our trim is white and walls currently taupe but I'm looking to paint them a very light gray.

    1. Chris,
You may be getting too much paint on your brush....you can go back with light sandpaper and smooth down. I did use the same brush but do wash every day. It doesn't do well wrapping in plastic until the next day, gets gummy. I did not use a roller b/c my doors are paneled. If yours are smooth, definitely use a roller. Be sure and send me some pix!
      Good luck!

  35. Absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to get started!! A couple of questions - one is related to a previous question about brightly colored walls. The walls in our family room (which is more like a great room - very open and only one full wall)are "ripe currant", a deep red - would the black door be too dark? And secondly, how many gallons did you use for 23 doors? I have 18 that are the same 6-panels doors you have (but mine are still white - lol). Thanks so much! :)

    1. I still think the black doors will look good with your red walls. Try one and see, you can always paint it back. I don't remember how much paint I used, for sure 2 gallons, perhaps 3. I have since gotten some more. :)

  36. I just recently painted my front door(interior only) black and totally love it. the only problem i had was my door had a glossy finish so when i put the black on, it almost slide off, the paint i mean. i had to keep going over it, and you can totally see the paint strokes or where you missed. in differently lighting i can see my imperfections so i was constantly touching up, but so worth it I LOVE MY FRONT BLACK DOOR! lol

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh Sherry...sorry. Yes, if there is gloss, you can spray on a liquid sand paper and de-gloss or completely strip off the varnish. It's a pain but the paint sticks better. You may want to invest the time and take off what you have done and start again.

  41. For those who have white kitchens and NO doors, only openings to the room: try painting your trim back. It really makes the white "pop". But if you have doors, paint them black instead. We don't ( at least not to the kitchen) .

    1. I used a medium brush, I did not use a roller b/c you cannot get inside the panels with it. Make sure to clean your brush everyday (don't wrap in plastic overnight, it's ok to do that for a few hours, but the paint really gunks up the brush). If you are seeing strokes, your brush may not be wet enough.

  55. Hi Renae,

I saw your doors on pinterest and I love the look! I live in an old home that was a parsonage for a church. There is tons of old wood and I love it, so not going to touch any of those doors. However, I am thinking about doing this to the upstairs bedrooms, bathroom, and attic door which are all painted white and all the trim is white up there as well. Do you think it would be ok to have black doors upstairs and the old natural oak downstairs, or would that be too disconnected? There is a door in the kitchen(main floor)that leads to the mud room that is white as well that I would like to paint as well, but with it being on the same floor as all the wood not sure how it would look. What are your thoughts?
Thank you so much in advance. I have lots of pics of my house currently that I could share to give you an idea of what i'm working with.

It may feel like a bit of a disconnect between the up and downstairs. What about finding a paint color in the tones of the beautiful wood you have downstairs? That way you can paint the door in the kitchen and the upstairs as well and there would be flow? If you want, send me a picture of your wood downstairs and I'll take a look! moore.designs1@gmail.com

I was showing my husband your pics and telling him we should do our doors but our concern is the interior garage door is flat. Didn't want to paint all the doors but leave that one white. what do you think?

  65. Hey Anon!
I don't think it would be too dark...but how about doing your doors in a deep deep chocolate almost black? If your walls are light it will be a nice contrast! How much fun for you to be able to choose all that you like! Good luck.

  66. Hey Renae! I LOVE the black doors. I recently bought a house and could not wait to paint the doors black after finding you on Pinterest. I'm so pleased with how they turned out. I'm even contemplating putting in black exterior doors. We currently have white bi-fold closet doors in the bedrooms, bathroom, and the entry way. I can't decide if we should paint those black or leave them white. Any thoughts?

  67. Definitely paint the bi-fold doors, it is a pain but definitely worth it.

  68. Renae, awesome job! That's a LOT of doors to paint! I just bought my first house & its wood trim & doors throughout. I was going to do it all white until I saw your pictures on Pinterest. Black doors it is! Question, what color is your powder room where you painted the vanity black? Looks like a dark blue to me & that's what I've been looking for!
    Thanks, Sarah V.

  69. Hi Sarah!
My powder room is actually a very dark green but you really cannot tell. It looks deep charcoal so I would go with that! Good luck!

  74. Love it, I did start this project already but it's scratching off :(
I deal with a wheelchair bumping into it four kids and a dog. I want to continue on but wondered if my paint was crap or put a sealer on it.
The black didn't go on well from that company?
Also I have brass knobs I want to spray paint them nickel, have you done this too?

  75. I love the look of the black doors with the white trim. We have the oak stained trim and doors in our house-everything is oak, even most of our furniture. Boring! I'm tried of them, but my husband says no to the white trim and painted doors. He thinks everything has to match and won't go for it.
